Yoram Yasur Izz: Resilience, why is it important?

Resilience is the capacity to affront adversity and adapt to tragedies, traumas, bad moments or severe stress. Being resilient doesn’t mean not feeling discomfort, emotional pain or difficulties. The loss of a loved one, financial problems or sickness are things that have a great impact in each one of us. Yoram Yasur Izz: Even though these things happen, people still manage to overcome these events and adapt again as time passes.

The road to resilience is not an easy one, so how do people do it? Yoram Yasur: Resilience is not something that we are born with, but it’s a mix of behaviors and thinking that anyone can learn, practice and develop.

So what makes a person resilient? There are 3 main characteristics:

  • They know how to accept reality as it is.
  • They have a great belief that life has sense.
  • They have the disposition to get better.

Besides these characteristics to be resilient you have to be able to identify the root of the problems to stop them from happening again. To this add having control of your emotions and impulses and having a realistic positivism. Yoram Yasur: Also you have to be empathetic and have the will to find new opportunities and satisfaction for your life.

Your thoughts and perceptions influence the way people fight with stress and problems. A resilient minded person is realistic, detailed and flexible. They usually commit less thinking mistakes, like exaggerating or assuming.

What helps a person to be resilient?

– Emotional support is one of the most important factors. Being surrounded by people who love and support you, and who you can trust can make you much more resilient than being alone or lonely.

– Allowing you to feel strong emotions without fearing or running away from them. At the same time, to be able to recognize when you should avoid feeling negative emotions and instead find a distraction.

– Don’t run away from problems, but face them and find solutions. It’s looking at problems like challenges you can overcome, and not like threats.

– Taking time to rest and recover strength. Knowing when to push you and knowing when to stop.

  • Physically healthier
  • More successful and satisfies with their jobs, studies and relationships.
  • Less probabilities of having depression
